I love a good soap opera, mainly because I come from the land of soap operas in South East Asia, the Philippines, and partly because I feed on drama and my life is akin to watching someone who is intently watching paint dry. This is why I immediately became a fan of Revenge. It had all the elements of a good, sometimes cheesy, and always dramatic, soap opera. We have a protagonist we could all root for. Emily Thorne lost everything - her father, her house, her money, her friends, her childhood - and now she is out for retribution. We have a fabulous diva-vilain in the form of Victoria Grayson who walks around her mansion in tight bandage dresses, while screaming utterly delicious lines such as "I will destroy you."
Whenever Emily and Victoria are together in a scene, fake-smiling at each other, my television just wants to explode. It shouldn't be that hard, writers. Stick to what made the first season one awesome Remember the red sharpie that Emily used to cross out from a photo the people she took revenge on? Remember when Lydia, Victoria's bestfriend and her husband's mistress, fell from four stories high and survived with nary a broken bone? We need more of this!
Instead, the writers have been trying to expand the story outside of Emily's revenge against the Graysons. This season we were given The Initiative, Jack trying to save the bar, Declan and Charlotte hating each other. Seriously, every time the camera moves to Jack's bar, I begin to fall asleep.
The only real highlight of this season was Amanda's death only because it brought back the show's focus on her revenge against the Graysons. Recent episodes have also been on the obvious path of ending annoying plotlines - thus we were given Padma's and Trask's deaths, the exit of Emily's foster brother.
There are a few episodes left until this season wraps up. Hopefully, the writers get their shiz together. Otherwise, I, and I suspect, many others, won't be back for a third season.
